How much do I really need to retire in the UK?

One of the most common questions I'm asked is the simplest one to ask and the hardest one to answer: how much do I actually need to retire?
The honest answer is that it depends — but not in a hand-wavy way. It depends on a handful of things you can genuinely put numbers around: the lifestyle you want, the age you'd like to stop working, what you've already saved, and what other income (like State Pension, rental or part-time work) will be coming in.
A useful starting point is to think in three layers. The first is your essentials — the bills, the food, the running of a home. The second is your comfortable layer — holidays, hobbies, helping family. The third is your "nice to have" layer — the new car, the bigger trip, the unexpected generosity. Each layer needs a different kind of certainty behind it.
This is where cash flow modelling earns its keep. Rather than chase a single retirement number, we map out the years ahead — income coming in, money going out, tax along the way — and stress-test it against the things that worry you most. Living longer than expected. A bad run of markets early on. Care costs later in life.
What people usually leave with isn't a number. It's a feeling that the plan is genuinely theirs, and that they've already thought through the scenarios that used to keep them up at night. That's what "enough" really means.
